A spotting scope earns its place at a range by saving you walks downrange. You see where the last shot landed, adjust, and shoot again, instead of firing a group and hiking to the target to find out what happened.

The buying decision is dominated by one number that turns out to matter far less than the box implies.

How much magnification you actually need

To see bullet holes at 100 yards, 18x to 36x is enough. A decent 50mm objective has the resolution to show .22 caliber holes at that distance; a 60mm gives you margin in worse light.

Nearly every scope on the market advertises 60x or higher. That top number is the least useful specification on the page, and here is why.

Mirage sets the real limit

On a warm day the air above the ground shimmers. Wind it up to 60x and you are magnifying that shimmer just as much as the target. When mirage is boiling, seeing bullet holes reliably is difficult with the finest optics made, and no amount of magnification fixes it — more magnification actively makes it worse.

Experienced shooters treat mirage as information rather than an obstacle: the direction and speed of the shimmer tells you what the wind is doing between you and the target. But it does mean the usable magnification on a hot afternoon is often half what the scope offers.

Vibration sets the other limit

At 40x and above, your heartbeat through the tripod and a light breeze against the tube are enough to make the image dance. Hand-holding a spotting scope at those magnifications is not possible in any useful sense.

The practical consequence is that most people run a 20-60x scope somewhere around 25-35x almost all the time, and reach for the top end only in still air at dawn.

Objective size, and the number nobody quotes

The objective is the front lens — the 80 in "20-60x80" — and it governs how much light the scope gathers. Bigger is brighter and heavier.

The figure worth calculating is the exit pupil: objective diameter divided by magnification. An 80mm scope at 20x gives a 4mm exit pupil, which is comfortably more than your pupil admits in daylight. The same scope at 60x gives about 1.3mm, which is well under it — so the image gets noticeably dimmer exactly when you wind up the magnification.

That is the same story from a different direction: the top of the magnification range is where the image is dimmest, shakiest, and most mirage-affected, all at once.

Glass quality

ED or HD glass reduces chromatic aberration — the colored fringing around high-contrast edges, which is exactly what a dark bullet hole on white paper is. It matters most in poor conditions, which is when you need the scope to work.

Between a cheap scope at 60x and a good scope at 30x, the good scope at 30x will show you more.

Angled or straight?

There is no optical difference. Manufacturers routinely sell the identical scope in both configurations with identical specifications. Choose on ergonomics alone:

  • Straight is faster to get onto a target, because the scope points where you are looking. It also wants a taller tripod, since the eyepiece must come to your eye.
  • Angled is more comfortable over long sessions and works with a shorter, more stable tripod, because you lean over it rather than sitting behind it. It is also easier to share between people of different heights.

For bench shooting from a seated position, angled is usually the more comfortable answer. For quickly checking a target between strings, straight is quicker.

The tripod is half the purchase

This is the part people get wrong. A good scope on a flimsy tripod performs worse than a modest scope on a solid one, because at 30x every tremor is magnified thirty times.

What matters is mass and stiffness rather than features. A light aluminum tripod meant for a compact camera will vibrate for several seconds after you touch the focus ring. Budget for the tripod as part of the scope purchase, not as an accessory you add later.

The specification that makes this the pick is the one that looks worst on paper: it tops out at 48x rather than 60x. That is the range you would actually use, in a lighter and more compact package, with HD glass doing the work that magnification cannot.

Common questions

Will I see .22 holes at 100 yards?

In good light, with decent glass, usually yes. In flat light or boiling mirage, often not — that is a condition problem rather than a scope problem, and spending more does not fully solve it.

Do I need 60x?

Almost never. Most range use sits between 25x and 35x. Treat the top of the range as a specification you paid for rather than one you will use.

Is a spotting scope better than a rifle scope for checking targets?

Yes, and safer. Using a mounted rifle scope to look at anything means pointing the firearm at it, which is the habit ranges exist to prevent. A spotting scope keeps the rifle on the bench and pointed downrange.

What about a phone adapter?

Useful for photographing your groups, and most budget scopes include one. It is a nice extra rather than a reason to choose a scope.
